FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Paul Wirhun ARTIST PAUL WIRHUN ANNOUNCES RITUALS TO TAKE PLACE AT “THE SKULL PROJECT” AT ST. MARK’S CHURCH-IN-THE-BOWERY Commemorative Rites to complete 23 day-long Art Project New York, NY October 28, 2004 Artist Paul Wirhun announces a series of commemorative rituals to end THE SKULL PROJECT, a public art ritual that has been remembering those killed in Iraq through the creation of mounds of skull eggs. To date, over 800 skull eggs have been made by the public and placed on mounds in the cemetery “West” Yard of St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery located at the corner of Second Avenue and Tenth Street in Manhattan. THE SKULL PROJECT, which is free and open to the public, continues through Tuesday, November 2, 2004. THE SKULL PROJECT is open daily from 11:00 A.M. dark (app. 6 P.M.). THE SKULL PROJECT will host three days of “Feasting the Dead,” beginning on Sunday, October 31 (Halloween), at 3 P.M. This communal potluck will occur daily from 36 P.M. from Halloween through Election Day (which coincides this year with The Day of the Dead). Rites of feeding and eating with ancestors (the deceased) occur throughout many cultures, and are especially seen in the USA within Mexican and Native American traditions. At 5 P.M. Sunday (10/31) there will be a Radical Faerie ritual called “The Dead can Dance” to celebrate Halloween. The rituals at the same time on Monday and Tuesday will include chanting and drumming. While THE SKULL PROJECT has yet to reach the numbers to match the casualty statistics in this war, many have had profound experiences while participating in the creation of the piles of skull eggs. One person wrote: “I made my skull and started to walk around the ritual space. I was overwhelmed with emotion. Walking around in silence brought up strong feelings of sadness. The more I looked at the skulls the more came up for me. I have been against this whole war from before it started but this was the first time I actually felt it in my heart. #### If you would like more information about THE SKULL PROJECT, or to schedule an interview, please contact Paul Wirhun at (917) 279-4996 or by email at eggmananda@aol.com |
